Mariana Mazzucato is a Professor of Economics at The Open University (UK), where she is also a member of the IKD research centre. She received her BA from Tufts University (MA) and her Masters and PhD in Economics from the New School University (NY). Her research uses theoretical, empirical and computational techniques to understand the nature of long-run differences between firms and the feedback between industry structure, the evolution of firm-specific capabilities, and firm performance—with particular attention on the random vs. more structured dynamics of firm growth. Her most recent work links the dynamics of technological change to the dynamics of idiosyncratic risk and the excess volatility of stock prices. Her work, funded by the Federal Reserve Bank (NY), the European Union and the British Academy, has resulted in various books and many journal articles.
